{"id":7480,"date":"2017-05-05T11:16:39","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T09:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/?p=7480"},"modified":"2017-05-08T13:49:19","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T11:49:19","slug":"il-tennis-lo-sport-del-diavolo-te-lo-racconta-un-appassionato-vero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/en\/il-tennis-lo-sport-del-diavolo-te-lo-racconta-un-appassionato-vero\/","title":{"rendered":"Tennis\u2026 a devil\u2019s game, a story told by a true fanatic!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who plays tennis knows that it\u2019s a devil\u2019s game; just by looking at the scoring system (15-30-40-game) you understand that it\u2019s a sport that could be defined as \u201cstrange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A little curiosity about the scoring system; the very first tennis players kept score on a clock, moving the hands a quarter of a lap forward (15 \u2013 30 \u2013 45) for each point won. This way of counting set the base for the modern system, that over the years has changed very little, only the 45 has become \u201c40\u201d in order to achieve an easier translation from English and French.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2005 and 2015, along with the prestigious hotel group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.selecthotels.it\/en-GB\" target=\"_blank\">Batani Select Hotels<\/a>, I have organized the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.selecthotels.it\/en-GB\/news\/adriatic_championship_torneo_tennis\" target=\"_blank\">International Veterans Tournament<\/a>, sponsored by Wilson equipment, and with a $ 10.000 dollar tournament purse. It is considered ad major tennis tournament in the Romagna region, but over time it has become the only International tournament for A level veterans in Italy\u2026what an achievement!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7514\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web1-1024x712.jpg\" alt=\"tennis_web1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web1-1024x712.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web1-768x534.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web1-770x535.jpg 770w, https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Player from all over the world enter the tournament; Brasil, Chile, Australia, Japan and from all of Europe. The matches on this level of play are often the toughest ones, and with some crazy behavior on court\u2026often, after long duels of hitting the ball back and forth, the players do not remember the original score, and the discussions are off\u2026 disputes that can only be settled by the tournament referee, or even the spectators as testimony, stepping in. The categories start from the youngest at 35 years of age and up, and arrive at the 85+ category.<\/p>\n<p>In the hotels it\u2019s a week of joy, all the hotels close to the tennis club; Palace Hotel, Hotel Aurelia, Hotel Doge, Hotel Brasil e Grand Hotel Gallia\u2026<br \/>\nI remember one time when the ITF showed up for a random anti-doping drug test, and a drug test center was quickly put together on the beach. There was this one 60+ player who was found with illegal substances in his body\u2026 doping ?? for real? No no, the player had exaggerated with wine at lunch, and his blood sugar values were altered for this reason!<\/p>\n<p>More than just a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.selecthotels.it\/en-GB\/news\/adriatic_championship_torneo_tennis\" target=\"_blank\">tournament<\/a>, here you are part of a huge, joyful event. In fact, if, and when you are eliminated from a tournament, in the majority of the cases, you leave the tournament site and go home\u2026but the participants at the Select Hotels tournament stick around even after they are eliminated, to watch the finals, enjoying themselves to the max.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7513\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web2-1024x692.jpg\" alt=\"tennis_web2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web2-1024x692.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web2-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web2-770x521.jpg 770w, https:\/\/blog.selecthotels.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/tennis_web2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Returning to the game of tennis, when you are on the court you need to stay concentrated, it doesn\u2019t take much distraction to hit ball too far\u2026and to get angry. A player who isn\u2019t able to return the ball to the other side of the net may have different reactions to this fact\u2026 even arriving at extremes like throwing your racket, or hitting it against the ground, and breaking it. I have seen an endless number of reactions like these during my years as an amateur player!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to try and rank them\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u201cwhining\u201d player<\/strong>\u2026 every shot is a bad one, and he\/she keeps complaining about it.<br \/>\n<strong>The \u201ccheater\u201d<\/strong>\u2026 the player who always calls the ball out, even when it has hit the line, cheating you out of a point.<br \/>\n<strong>The \u201cinjured\u201d player<\/strong>\u2026 every point (lost, obviously) is followed by stretching, grimacing, holding of the wrist\/calf\u2026and you start thinking about how much pain he\/she must be in \u2026.and at the end of it you lose your concentration and when you finally notice that the opponent is a survivor (despite the injuries), you\u2019re already down in the game and won\u2019t recover!<br \/>\n<strong>The commentator<\/strong>\u2026 the player who comments on every shot; your and his; trying to make you nervous and to throw you off your game.<br \/>\n<strong>The \u201cscreamer\u201d<\/strong>\u2026 shouts, or moans loudly when hitting the ball.
